Neomycin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal aminoglycosidic antibiotic with particular activity against certain members of the Enterobacteriaceae e.g. Escherichia coli. Its mode of action is at the ribosomal level. When administered orally, only a fraction (<5%) is absorbed systemically, the remainder remains as the active compound in the gastrointestinal tract of the animal. Neomycin is not inactivated by enzymes or food. These pharmacological properties lead to neomycin being an efficacious antibiotic in the prevention and treatment of enteric infections caused by bacteria sensitive to neomycin.
For treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal infections due to Escherichia coli in pigs, chickens, turkeys and ducks.
20,000iu Neomycin per kg body weight per day, orally, for 10 days.
Pigs: For daily feed intake of 50g of feed per kg body weight, this dosage corresponds to 400iu of Neomycin per g of feed. Equivalent to:
Chickens, turkeys and ducks: For daily feed intake of 100g of feed per kg body weight, this dosage corresponds to 200iu of Neomycin per g of feed. Equivalent to:
Incorporation rate:
The amount of medicated feed consumed by animals depends on their physiological and clinical status. In order to comply with the recommended doses of neomycin and take into account the actual dietary intake, the incorporation rate may be increased or possibly decreased to the minimum incorporation limit of 200iu Neomycin per g of feed. This may lead to levels of neomycin in the medicated feed different from those mentioned below for information purposes.
